Getting Delegation Right

Overview

Delegation content is everywhere: job aids, workshops, and eLearning courses. Managers still name it as one of the harder parts of the job. Most training stops at the model and moves on, when the skill only builds through practice. A manager can leave a workshop or eLearning course with a good model in their head, then freeze weeks later handing off a real task to someone who's rattled, not just new. The training that taught the model isn't there for the moment that actually needs it.

Approach

I built this on the Five Moments of Need framework (Mosher and Gottfredson). The first two paths are learning moments, so they teach a delegation model's foundations. The remaining three paths are performance-support moments, so they skip the reteaching and drop a manager straight into a live handoff. I programmed the five paths to be non-linear: a learner can pick whichever one matches the moment they're actually in.

Solution

The live path teaches the Skill/Will Matrix (Max Landsberg) as the delegation framework through four short scenarios featuring Sam, a fictional direct report. A manager reads Sam's skill and will on each task, then sees the delegation style fit for each scenario. A wrap-up gives a personalized read on how the manager did, plus the one misread almost every manager makes.

The interactive learning experience is made possible by Replit, an AI-powered app builder. The demo features the first of five paths. The rest are queued behind it, being built to run on richer AI-driven interactions that mimic a real, unpredictable handoff instead of a fixed script.
